A 14-hydroxy-normorphinone derivative of Formula (I) wherein R 1 and R 2 may be the same or different and each represents a C 1-4 alkyl group, an allyl group or an aralkyl group, is obtained by heating a normorphinone derivative of Formula (II) in an aprotic solvent with either a substantially equimolar amount of pyrrolidine, or an alcohol R 3 OH (wherein R 3 is a C 1-4 alkyl or an alkoxyalkyl group) in the presence of an aromatic sulphonic acid, to produce an intermediate of Formula (III) or (V) respectively, and oxidizing said intermediate (e.g. with H 2 O 2 ) to produce the compound of Formula (I). |
