The safety device (10) is constructed as a plug device (10) which can be plugged into a plug socket (2) in a mains circuit, and contains a push-button switch (11) which, when it is operated, produces a residual current between the neutral conductor (N) and the protective-earth conductor (G) in order to trip a residual current device (6). The push-button switch (11) can be connected between the live conduction (L) and the neutral conductor (N) or between the neutral conductor (N) and the protective-earth conductor (G), the latter possibility depending on the residual current device (6) also tripping in the event of the neutral conductor being shorted to earth. A protective resistor (16) is connected in series with the switch (11), in order to limit the current. The safety device (10) is provided for quick-action disconnection of an electrical mains circuit having at least one live conductor (L), one neutral conductor and one protective-earth conductor, which is equipped with a residual current device (6). <IMAGE>
