Silphenylene polymers are made by reacting together, in the presence of a solvent, an organolithium compound of the formula RLi, wherein R is an alkyl radical of 2 to 10 C atoms, and a compound of the formula <FORM:0912267/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 and R11 are each an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or alkenyl radical having 2 to 20 C atoms, X is Br or I, Y is Cl, Br, I or an alkoxy radical and the group -C6H4- is a meta- or para-phenylene group. Solvents used are ethers and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The reaction can be effected at temperatures from -100 DEG to 100 DEG C. In a typical Example (4) a pentane solution of n-butyl-lithium was added to a cooled (-75 DEG C.) diethyl ether solution of dibenzyl-p-bromophenyl chlorosilane and the mixture slowly warmed to 15 DEG C. for two hours, after which water was added and the ether layer was separated and purified to yield white crystals of the polymer. Uses: as heat-resistant plastics and thermally stable lubricants. |
