[Also in Division D2] Hydrocarbon resins are produced by polymerizing a mixture of (A) hydrocarbons boiling above 130‹ C., containing 50-100% of aromatic hydrocarbons and which were obtained from the cracking or reforming of petroleum, and (B) hydrocarbons boiling in the range -15‹ to +45‹ C. and at least a part of which are unsaturated. The (A) hydrocarbons may be obtained from steam cracking of petroleum and may contain 52% styrene, indene and their derivatives, 39% of other aromatic compounds, 3% of olefines, less than 1% of diolefines and 5% of paraffins and naphthenes. The (B) hydrocarbons may be mainly butene and butadiene and may comprise 34% of olefines, 42% of diolefines and 24% of paraffins. Polymerization may be in bulk in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. boron trifluoride-phenol or -ethyl ether complex, and at -80‹ to +80‹ C. The hydrocarbon resins may be partially reacted with an aliphatic α,#-unsaturated-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, e.g. maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, or itaconic acid, and then mixed and heated with (1) rosins, e.g. gum or tall oil or (2) C 12-24 fatty acid and the product is then saponified with an aqueous alkali, e.g. KOH or triethanolamine, to disperse or solubilize it in water. |
