Novel processes for converting sulfurous anhydride to sulfuric anhydride and vice versa, which processes are carried out in the gaseous phase with a catalyst comprising iron, copper, and at least one alkali metal selected from among sodium and potassium, the catalyst simultaneously having good activity at 600 DEG C. and withstanding temperatures up to 850 DEG C. without degradation.
