The method described relates to coding methods in which speech sections are exchanged and/or the frequency spectrum of speech sections is changed. After the decoding, the transition areas between the speech sections are replaced by a signal variation which is produced by extrapolation from the preceding variation of the speech signal. The most important components for implementing the method are a random-access memory (4), a change-over switch (5) and control units (6, 7, 8, 9), by means of which the position of the changeover switch (5) and the operating mode of the random-access memory (4) are controlled. At the beginning of a transition area, the forwarding of the decoded signal from a decoding device (3) to an output (2) is interrupted by the change-over switch (5). Following this, the parts of the decoded signal which had previously been written into the random-access memory (4) are supplied to the output (2) during the period of the transition area. <IMAGE>
