A panel 9 of a hatch cover (8) is pivotally connected at 44a to the confronting edge of a hatch panel 11 on which is mounted a self-contained drive unit comprising an electric motor (94) Fig. 3 (not shown) driving a chain and a shaft (91) Figs. 2, 3, 8 (not shown) connected by a drive nut (81) (Fig. 8) to a reciprocable screw jack 52 having a screw thread 65 which is self-locking under compression. Extension of the jack 52 rotates a lever arm 45 pivotally attached by a clevis 67 thereto and to the cover 11 at 49, thereby rotating a connecting link 56 pivotally connected at one end 55 to the apex 54 of the lever arm 45 and at its other end 58 between hinge plates 38 (not shown) and 38a secured to the cover 9, these mutual rotations causing the covers 9, 11 to "break" upwardly. The end of cover 9 remote from the linkage then moves on rollers (27) along rails on the hatch coaming Fig. 1 (not shown), the free end of cover 11 being pivotally attached to the coaming by two spaced apart hinges (24), Fig. 1, with axes parallel to hinge 44a. Covers 9, 11 rotate relatively through 180‹ to the open position in which they are locked by the action of the thread 65, the hatch being closed by reversing the motor. The one motor drives two sets of jacks and pivoted linkages between each pair of hatch covers Fig. 3 (not shown), the hatch opening being normally closed by two pairs of covers moving to opposite sides thereof during opening. An air motor attached to a free end of shaft 91 may drive the jack on failure of the electric motor. |
