Methane is prepd. by conversion of >=2C hydrocarbons by contacting the hydrocarbon and hydrogen with a finely-divided high surface area catalyst consisting of (a) 0.01-99.9% of a Pd-Pt gp. metal and (b) 0.01-99.9% of an iron -gp. metal, the metals being distributed throughout the finely divided high surface area catalyst. The mixt is contacted at 300-800 degrees C and the effluent gas contains >=50 wt.% methane. The catalyst is pref. an iron-platinum catalyst supported on a silica-alumina support. Suitable hydrocarbons are heptane, isobutane, n-butane, benzene, methylcyclopropane, and esp. hexane. 90-100% of the hydrocarbon may be converted to methane. |
