1,188,446. Change speed gearing. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. 22 Nov., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 55412/68. Heading F2D. A transmission comprises two constant mesh gears 60, 62, Fig. 1, each fast with a countershaft 18, 20 having two further gears 32, 64 and 34, 68 journalled thereon each being connectible to its countershaft by a clutch 36, 66 or 38, 70, one of each of the two further gears being in constant mesh with an input gear 30 and the other two further gears journalled on each countershaft being in constant mesh with each other. A torque converter 22 which drives shaft 18 through gears 30, 32 and clutch 36, also drives shaft 20 through gears 30, 34 and clutch 38 and drives a pump 24, supplying pressure fluid to the torque converter and clutches, through gears 26, 28. Gear 68 drives output shaft 16 through gear 72. Each clutch is engaged by pressure fluid acting on a piston 48 which press plates 46 together to connect the hub 40 to the drum 42 through the plates 46. Selective engagement of clutches 36, 38, 66 and 70 provides two forward and two reverse speeds. In another embodiment which provides three speed ratios in forward or reverse a countershaft 74, Fig. 3 (replacing countershaft 18) has a gear 76 fixed thereto in constant mesh with a gear 84, rotatably mounted on a shaft 80, which can be clutched to shaft 80 by engagement of a clutch 86 integral with a gear 94 which meshes with a gear 96. The latter meshes with a gear 100 fixed to the main output shaft 102. The auxiliary output shaft 104 can be connected to shaft 102 by a sliding tooth clutch 106. In another embodiment which provides four forward and four reverse speed ratios the shaft 98 in Fig. 3 is replaced by a shaft (108), Fig. 4 (not shown), which has a fixed gear (96) and a rotatably mounted gear (110) in constant mesh with gear (84), the gear (110) being connected to the shaft (108) when a clutch (112) is engaged. |
