Packing material for mass transfer columns - using strips of material e.g. metal bent into curves with inserts cut into them and the cut out portion formed into a flap

Packing material for reaction and exchange processes between liquids and gases or vapours consists of strips of material formed into curves. In these one or more flaps project towards the centre of the curve. The strip is formed into an open curve. At least one part is cut out and this then forms the flap which projects inwards. The strip can have circular, elliptical, parabolic or hyperbolic profile. It can extend to a full 180 degrees or any angle between 90 degrees and 180 degrees. The flaps extend inwards over the radius R of the strip to a distance between R/5 and R. Used in mass transfer columns. The packing forms a bed of random arrangement with large surface area which interlink with each other to a max. extent and anchor each other so that, for marked temp. fluctuations in the column wall, they form a mechanically rigid structure.
