A portable electric hand tool, e.g. electric drill is fitted with a tachogenerator and plug in sensor as a means of specd. regulation. The output shaft of the main motor has a projecting shaft beyond the bearings that carries the coil of the tachogenerator. A plug in module carries a sensing coil to provide the tachogenerator output. The location for the plug in module is formed on the internal surface of the drill housing. An isolating wall separates the sensor from the main drill unit.
