The amines are prepd. by passing an aromatic amine and an aliphatic alcohol through heated H3PO4 in the presence of organic sulphonic acids and/or derivs. thereof. Pref. the sulphonic acid and/or its deriv. has the formula (I): R1 - SO3 n - X (I) (where R1 is 1-30C aliphatic gp. opt. substd. by >=1 halogen, O, S and/or 1-20C alkyl gp; X is H, metal or 1-20C alkyl opt. substd. by >=1 halogen, O and/or S gps.; n is the no. of bonds satisfying X.).
