A method of securing a smooth surface thin coating of gelled vinyl plastisol on a non-uniform substrate. A first thin coating of vinyl plastisol is applied to the surface of the non-uniform substrate to coat the substrate. This coating is then gelled. A second thicker coating of vinyl plastisol is then applied over the first coating. This surface is then gelled and a design is printed over the second gelled surface. The total thickness of the two coatings applied to the substrate is in the range of from 4 to 9-1/2 mils.
