The installation conveys processes and stores workpieces. There is at least one processing point to which the workpieces are successively and separately supplied on carriages which run on at least four rollers arranged in pairs and which include a pickup mechanism for one item. The carriages have sidewalls inclined upwards and inwards and the rollers run on rails. Clamping rails fit over the sidewalls of the carriages on both sides over sections of the rails. The clamping rails are inclined at their free lower edges both upwards and inwards. Clamping blocks can press against the carriages from below in their stopped position to press the sidewalls against the clamping rails.
