An underground depository for storing radioactive wastes contained in shielded containers 2 is composed of at least one shaft 4,7 extending downwardly from the surface, a radioactive waste storage region 1 located above an underground passage 3, and a connecting passage connecting the storage region 1 with the underground passage 3. The connecting passage may be a helical passage 5 and/or a blind shaft 6. The shafts 4,7 are preferably connected by a passage 3 in the form of a sink 8 which, should a large break-in of water occur, is filled first along with sinks 17 preferably connected to the passage 5 and shaft 6. Air discharged from the sinks 17 escapes into the storage region 1 and is there compressed. Additional air for preventing the masses of water 12, 13, 14 from having access to the storage region is forced in through pipelines 9 installed in shafts 4,7 and along passage 3. Pasty filler masses can subsequently be pumped in through the pipelines 9. <IMAGE> |
