An arrangement for releasably clamping together two telescoped tubes (11, 12) e.g. a bicycle steering column has an axially displaceable cone (18) within the inner tube (11), the outer surface (19) of the cone (18) bearing against wedges (21 to 23) in closed-ended guide slots formed in the inner tube and clamping being achieved by a threaded spindle (15). The slots and wedges extend parallel to the lengthwise axis of the tubes. The longitudinal central plane of at least one slot and wedge is offset with regard to the axis of the tubes. The frictional clamping effect extends in the axial direction and the clamped tubes can accommodate larger bending moments and transmit larger torque or rotational moments for the same spindle tightening torque compared with prior arrangements. <IMAGE> |
