PURPOSE:To obtain terephthalic acid at a low cost, by oxidizing P-xylene with O2 in acetic acid solvent, using a catalyst consisting of a manganese and a cobalt compounds, hydrogen bromide, cobalt bromide or manganese bromide in specific weight ratios at specified reaction temperature and moisture content. CONSTITUTION:P-xylene is oxidized with O2 in acetic acid in acetic acid solvent by using a catalyst consisting of (a) 120-200 ppm based on the solvent, calculated as Co of a cobalt compound, (b) a manganese compound at a weight ratio of Mn to Co of 0.5-1.5:1, and (c) 200-1,000ppm based on the solvent, calculated as bromine of hydrogen bromide, cobalt bromide, or manganess bromide at 205-230 deg.C and a moisture content of the liquid phase of 4-14wt.%, preferably 6-12wt.% to give terephthalic acid. EFFECT:Terephthalic acid of high activity and grade can be obtained even at a small amount of the catalyst with a small amount of solvent to be burned. |
