Novel compounds of the general formula <FORM:1123415/C2/1> in which X and Z each represent a hydrogen atom and Y represents two hydrogen atoms, or X and Z together represent a double bond and Y represents an oxygen atom are obtained by (a) cyclization of an ester of 2-carboxy-4-nitro-N-b -(31, 41-dimethoxyphenethyl)-phenylacetamide III e.g. with phosphorus oxychloride, or (b) by cyclization of 2-hydroxymethyl-4-nitro-N-b -(31,41 - dimethoxyphenethyl) - phenyl acetamide VII and reduction of the olefinic bond so formed. Reduction may be effected by means of an alkali metal borohydride. The starting compound VII may be obtained by reducing the ester of the acid of Formula III with an alkali metal borohydride. |
