The invention relates to compounds of the general formula (a) in which HAL is chlorine or bromine and n is 2 to 5, (b) in which R represents an alkyl radical containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, or a lower dialkylamino group or the group -CN or a lower alkoxy radical, (c) in which HAL is chlorine or bromine, and (d) and also to the N-oxides and the salts with acids of compounds of the general formula in which R is an aromatic residue which may be substituted by one or more halogen atoms, a lower alkyl or alkoxy group containing 1-4 C atoms or one of the groups (wherein A and A1 are identical or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group containing 1-4 C atoms) or comprises the N-oxides or salts of these compounds with acids, together with a suitable carrier. The compounds may be obtained by heating bromopyridine with a phenol in the presence of an acid acceptor, or by heating N-pyridyl-(4)-pyridinium halides with a phenol. The salts of the compounds can be obtained by reaction with acids that are known to be capable of forming salts, for example with hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric or perchloric acid. The N-oxides or the compounds may be obtained by reaction with a suitable oxidant, for example hydrogen peroxide in an acetic acid solution.
