A metal plate is etched by covering it with at least one layer of a metal (or metals) which is more resistant to attack by the etchant used than is the metal of the plate, masking the layer with a masking material in areas not required to be etched, etching away unmasked areas of the covering metal layer or layers and the metal plate and finally removing residual portions of the masking layer and the metal layer or layers. The plate may be of brass or steel and the covering layer of nickel or nickel over copper. The etchant may be ferric chloride and the masking material a photoresist. |
