Between certain turns of one or more windings of a transformer, a conducting layer 2, of a material of high resistivity or an insulating film which in the frequency range of the partial resonances has a large dielectric loss angle is inserted in order to damp the partial resonances due to inter-turn capacitance. The layer may comprise paper coated with a material of high resistivity e.g. carbon black or a colloidal graphite dispersion or an insulating film coated with vapour phase deposited metal. The selection of the turns and windings having these damping layers is determined by the transformer design and the required frequency of operation, the transformer being intended for use in an amplifier used in the communications field and may have a negative feedback winding. Also it may be of the disc coil type, the damping layers being between the disc coils or between radially spaced layers thereof. |
