[Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A rigid pipe or rod a of substantially uniform cross-section is wrapped with a tape b, which extends longitudinally of the pipe or rod and has a width substantially equal to the peripheral dimension of the pipe or rod, the longitudinal edges of the tape being pressed towards the rod by a roller 9 and the tape then being coated with a transparent thermoplastic resin c, e.g. by an extrusion nozzle 10. The pipe or rod may be of metal, e.g. iron, wood or plastics material, and may be of circular elliptical or substantially I- shaped cross-section, Figs. 8-10, (not shown). The tape may be of metal e.g. aluminium foil or cloth, paper or plastics material provided with a metallized surface. The tape may be coloured, marked or embossed. The tape is skelped round the pipe or rod by passing both components through successive apertures of decreasing size, Fig. 3 (not shown), and then through a member 8 having a bore tapering towards its outlet end 81, which is provided with a resilient lining. The plastics coating c may be of cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate-butyrate or P.V.C. A further plastics coating, e.g. of P.V.C., polyethylene or polypropylene, may be applied to the pipe or rod before the tape b is applied. |
