A gas distributor (5) is removable from a pipe (2) for cleaning or replacement, without stopping the flow of liquid through the channel 1 into which the pipe 2 opens. A ballcock 8 may be used to close the pipe when the gas distributor has been moved to the end of the pipe remote from the channel. Alternatively two diametrically opposed gas distributors may be arranged on a rotatable ball so that one of the distributors can be used when the other distributor is being cleaned or replaced. The apparatus is used for aerating sewage.
