A bottle capping or stoppering machine comprises a compound starwheel having plates 16-18, Fig. 1, with peripheral axially aligned notches 19 . . . 21 for engagement with plastics &c. bottles B advanced tangentially past the starwheel by a straight chain conveyer 4, Fig. 2, a top plate 22 of the starwheel having peripheral notches 23 which pick-up bottle caps &c. C one at a time from a cap &c. feed 6. Above each cap &c. receiving notch 23 a vacuum holder 25 is mounted on the top plate 22, and is connected by a pipe (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), to an automatic valve 32, 33 operated by rotation of the starwheel, and thence connected to a source of vacuum. The valve 32, 33 opens as a notch 23 picks-up a cap &c. C from the feed, so that the vacuum holder 25 retains the cap &c. and closes when the cap &c. has been carried round by the starwheel 16-18 and applied to the bottle B. As the cap &c. C is aligned with the neck of a bottle B, Fig. 1, a roller 26 at the top of the vacuum holder 25 engages a cam 27 on a fixed machine support 14 and slides the vacuum holder 25 downwardly through the top plate 23 against spring bias; the cap &c. is thus forced on to the bottle. During this capping &c. process, arcuate guide surfaces on fixed plates 11-13 are engaged by the bottle B and slide it slightly sideways on the conveyer 4, thus maintaining the bottle aligned with the cap &c. receiving notch 23. When the cap &c. C has been pushed home, the cam 27 releases the holder 25, which is no longer connected through the automatic valve 32, 33 to the vacuum source, and the holder is spring-raised clear of the bottle B, which continues on its straight path X1-X1 along the conveyer 4. With continued rotation of the starwheel, the notch 23 picks up another cap C &c. Plastics bottles.-The plastics bottles B, Fig. 1, are shaped as shown, with a lower part 1 of reduced diameter and a narrowed waist 2.
