A punched or magnetic tape 2 carries information for controlling an electric typewriter, each line of characters has a corresponding line number on the tape, this number being accompanied by a carriage return character and followed by the characters for that line. Another tape 4 carries amendments to be made to the information on the tape 2, each set of amended characters being preceded by the appropriate line number and the carriage return character. On depressing start keys 15 and 17, tapes 2 and .4 are advanced until the respective first line numbers are under readers 1, 3. Assuming the line number on tape 2 to be less than that on tape 4, tape 2 is advanced by a signal from terminal 27 of comparator 22 and gates 36 are opened to enter the information read from tape 2 into a store, typewriter or punch 39. Each carriage return character is detected at 53 and steps generator 55 to produce successive line numbers as each line of characters is entered into 39. When the line numbers on tapes 2 and 4 are the same, comparator 22 produces an output at terminal 28 to advance tapes 2 and 4 simultaneously, only the information from tape 4 being entered into 39 via gates 48. |
