MECHANICAL SPECTRAL SHIFT REACTOR

The nuclear reactor is water-cooled and has a vessel with a closure head. The reactor core includes fuel assemblies with a number of slidable water displacing elements. Drives for the displacing elements are mounted on the closure head. The elements are received and guided though the upper part of the reactor by guides in the reactor vessel above the fuel assemblies. The arrangement is used to control excess reactivity in a spectral shift pressurised water reactor. Fuel costs are reduced and core life extended.
