1286683 Bearings; labyrinth seals S V ANTHONY 10 Dec 1969 [11 Dec 1968] 60240/69 Headings F2A and F2B A seal 17 for a ball or roller bearing is formed from a resilient material, such as nylon, into a gapped ring. The seal has an outer periphery which is either stepped or ridged and may have an axially extending portion 25 having a tapered surface 26, and has an inner periphery which is either stepped or tapered. An outer race 11 of the bearing is recessed at 18 to receive the seal and an inner race 15 is grooved at 16 to receive the stepped inner portion of the seal, the groove 16 facilitating the assembly of the seal. The latter has an external diameter which is greater than the diameter of the recess in the outer race and has to be deformed when being assembled into position. In the assembled state the gap of the seal is closed and the stepped portion thereof forms a labyrinth seal with the groove 16. Opposed faces 30, 31, Fig. 4, of the gap 29 may be provided with a projection 32 and a recess 33 respectively. |
