In a method for polymerizing olefins there is used a Ziegler-type catalyst composed of a first catalyst component which consists of (a) magnesium or manganese halide, (b) a titanium or vanadium compound containing halogen atom and (c) an electron donor compound; and a second catalyst component expressed by a general formula of M1 Al R1 R2 R3 R4 or M2 (Al R1 R2 R3 R4)2, where M1 is Na or K, M2 is Ca, Sr, Ba or Mg, and each of R1 R2 R3 R4 is a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 of carbon atoms. In a modification at least three R groups may be other than hydrocarbon groups.
