Lens of variable focal length having a diverging front element (A), a displaceable converging lens element (B) and a basic lens (C). A part (k) of the basic lens (C) is coupled to the displaceable converging lens element (B) in terms of motion in such a way that when this lens element (B) is displaced it is displaced by a smaller distance in the same direction. In order to suppress chromatic aberrations, there is provided in the displaceable part (k) of the basic lens (C) a cemented surface (r10) which is deeply curved with respect to the front element (A) and whose refractive index is lower at the convex side than at the concave side. <IMAGE>
