The safety valve is fitted with a sealing disc (4b) which ensures an efficient seal at either side, instead of one side only. This enables the equipment in whic it is fitted to be evacuated by using pressure in the opposite direction. The valve ball (12) is supported by a cap (18) in the tapered valve member (5) which can enter the tapered end of the valve portion with the seal (4b) between. The seal (4b) between the seal is correspondingly tapered, with a sealing lip projecting each side, in contact with the tapered surface. On the pressure side is a peripheral groove (15) with an air relief channel (16) behind it. The seal can be metallic or non metallic.
