Appts. comprises an initial wash and softening tank, a conveyor for removing the hides from the wash tank to the dung removal and drying stage. The conveyor consists of two horizontal belts between which the hides are gripped and transported. The last stage comprises a chain conveyor which grips the hide along the longitudinal axis in the direction of motion, a series of rotating drums with coms set horizontally beneath the moving hide and inclined at an angle to give the max. contact surface, between each drum a water spray bar directed at the hide and finally a roller with scrapers which removes the moisture from the surface of the cleaned hide. The chain conveyor consists of an upper chain with rubber pads which press against the smooth side of the hide and a lower chain with support plates on which the hairy side of the hide rests. Each drum comb is placed between an adjustable bar above the hide by means of which the distance of the comb tips from the hide can be precisely adjusted in accordance with the thickness of the hide. The ribs of the last roller are adjusted so that they are in contact with the hide and squeeze the water out of the hair. Water useage is minimised.
