<p>Resorcinol (I) is prepd. by (a) contacting m-phenylenediamine (II) with NH4HSO4 in an aq. soln. contg. 4-12 moles NH4HSO4 per mole (II) and 40-120 moles water per mole (II) at 200-300 degrees C for 1/2 to 8 hr. to hydrolyse (II); (b) cooling the mixt; and (c) extracting (I) from the soln. with a water-immiscible org. solvent. The process results in high yields, and with little or no resinficiation of the prod.</p> |
