PURPOSE:To prepare 20alpha-hydroxymethylpregna-1,4-dien-3-one (HPD) and 20alpha- hydroxymethylpregn-4-en-3-one (4HP) in high yield, useful as intermediates of adrenal cortical hormone, corpus luteum hormone, etc. by culturing bacteria belonging to Mycobacterium genus, in a medium containing sterols as substrate and glyceride. CONSTITUTION:HPD of formula I and 4HP of formula II are prepared by culturing bacteria belonging to Mycobacterium genus, e.g. Mycobacterium parafortuitum complex MCI-0617 (FERM-P No.4258), in a medium containing sterols, e.g. sterol, its C-3 ester derivative, etc., as substrate, and 0.1-10%, pref. 0.2-7%, more pref. 0.3-4% of a glyceride, or animal or vegetable fats and oils containing the glyceride. |
