In a carbon black reactor (2) (figure 1), a quench fluid containing combustible material is introduced through conduits (32) (figure 1) or (26) (figure 2) in a generally tangential direction into a combustion zone (22) (figure 2). The combustion gases produced tangentially enter a connected reaction zone (23). The quench fluid serves to control the temperature of the combustion gases before their introduction into the reaction zone. Control means is provided for controlling the quench fluid input in response to the temperature of the combustion gases.
