Metal gutter die for mfg. glass fibres, has a bath with outlet tubes for drawing the fibres in its base. Above the bath is a melting compartment for the top charging of prim. glass material uniformly along the entire length of the gutter. Compartment has two undulating side walls forming a row of connected cylinders; and struts are pref. used to reinforce the narrow width of compartment where one cylinder blends into the next cylinder. The cylinders may be round; elliptical; or be curved at the top edges of compartment and blend into flat sections where the walls join the bath. The total length of the walls forming compartment, and their curvature, is pref. selected to match the amt. of electric resistance heating required. Max. use is made of an expensive metal; and the struts provide mechanical strength so the gutter retains its shape. |
