A liquid crystal material includes in solution therewith a pleochroic dye characterised in that the dye is an anthraquinone of general formula: <CHEM> where R2 is either hydrogen or a hydroxyl group and where R3 is an anilino or substituted or modified anilino group and where R1 is hydrogen when R2 is a hydroxyl group and R1 is an anilino or substituted or modified anilino group, preferably the same as R3, when R2 is hydrogen. A large number of alternatives for R3 are disclosed.
