In the removal of bacteria from liquids and apparatus therefore, an ion exchange resin bed (19) for the removal of bacteria from a liquid passed through it has, on its downstream side a submicron filter (23) which will become blocked by bacteria leaking from the bed (19) and so connected to the resin bed that blockage will cause pressure to build up to reduce the flow of liquid leaving the filter (23) which not only indicates exhaustion of the bed (19) but also provides a safety factor against passage of bacteria into the effluent liquid. |
