Prepn. of p-hydroxyphenyl-glycine of formula (I) or its N-alkyl or N,N-dialkyl derivs. comprises reacting mandelic acid or its salts with ammonia or an alkylamine or a dialkylamine or their salts: (I) is a pharmaceutical intermediate used in the prepn. of amoxycillin and in the prepn. of p-hydroxybenzyl cyanide (BE-867286). Process gives >90% yield, (c.f. 50% in prior processes). |
