PURPOSE:To obtain an alkyl phenol having at least one orthe-alyl group, by selective alkylation of the o-position of a phenolic compound, using a catalyst consisting of highly active chromium oxide and tin oxide under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic compound having at least one hydrogen atom at the o-position of formula (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H or aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, e.g. methyl groups, etc.) is catalytically reacted with a 1-4C lower saturated aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a catalyst consisting of chromium oxide and tin oxide at 300-550 deg.C and ortho-alkylated to form the desired compound, e.g. 2,6-xylenol, etc. The ratio of atoms Cr to Sn is preferably 100:0.1-100:60, and Cr2O3, and SnO2 are most preferred. EFFECT:Sufficient phenol conversion ratio at low temperatures with little loss of catalytic activity. USE:A raw material for a plastic polyphenylene oxide. |
