PURPOSE:To obtain a dihydric phenol, e.g. catechol, etc., with high selectively, by direct oxidation of a phenol with a peroxide, e.g. H2O2, etc., using a hydroxycarboxylic acid as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A phenol is oxidized with at least one type of a peroxide or its salt selected from an organic peracid, e.g. peracetic acid, perpropionic acid, etc., H2O2, and an organic hydroperoxide selectively to give a dihydric phenol, e.g. pyrocatechol, etc. alpha-Hydroxymonocarboxylic acid or its salt, e.g. gtdrixtusibyttruc acic, benzilic acid, etc. having two hydroxarbon groups at the carbib atin at tge alpha-position to the carboxyle group, etc. may be cited as the hydroxymonocarboxylic acid or its salt, and the amount is 10-15-10<-10> mole, preferably 10<-4>-5X10<-2> mole per mole of the phenol. EFFECT:High catalytic activity and outstanding activity even in a very small amount. |
