PURPOSE:To realize multi-behavior actions by making variable the optical power binding efficiency between two optical guides, making use of the changes in the concentration of free carriers injected or controlled in a semiconductor. CONSTITUTION:Bent optical guides 2, 3, 4 are provided which intersect or contact along the surface of a semiconductor layer 1, and the refractive index of the inside of each optical guide is set higher than that of the outside. When the light enters from an input end 7 of the otpical guide 2, if carriers are injected from an electrode 5 into the region located just beneath the electrode 5, the light entering from the input end 7 exits from an output end 8. By decreasing the quantity of carriers injected from the electrode 5, the refractive index in the region just beneath the electrode 5 becomes closer to that of the inside of the optical guide 2. Thus, by controlling the quantity of carriers injected, the rate of light led into the optical guides 2, 3 may be controlled. |
