PURPOSE:To enable to display video signal, by converting the video signal into parallel signal, taking one horizontal scanning period as maximum modulation amplitude, obtaining the pulse modulation signal according to the luminance signal level, and performing luminance modulation with a good efficiency. CONSTITUTION:The signal from the input terminal 14 of video signal is fed to the sampling hold circuit 15, based on the pulse from the pulse generator 19 referencing the synchronizing signal separated from the synchronous separation circuit 18, sampling is made corresponding to each video element and the signal is converted into parallel signal according to the luminance level. This signal is converted into the pulse modulation signal with the pulse width modulation circuit 16 and is fed to the amplifier 17, and the output of the amplifier 17 is fed to each electrode I and J of the control electrode 17 of the display panel. Further, the synchronizing signal from the circuit 18 is fed to the circuit 16 via the erase pulse generator 22, blaking is made by applying the output to the anode 7 via the amplifier 23, and scanning pulse is generated by applying the synchronizing signal to the scanning pulse generator 20 and this pulse is fed to each electrode for control via the amplifier 21.
