The control is for a grinding machine in which a rotating grinding disc and a spindle held workpiece are moved relative to each other. The relative motion takes place in a first step at a first mean linear speed up to contact between grinding disc and workpiece. There is then a connected deflection of workpiece and for machine parts. The movement of the grinding disc into the workpiece takes place in a second step at a second, slower linear speed. On achieving a given workpiece diameter, the separation of workpiece and grinding disc takes place in a third step at a third linear speed which is greater than the second speed.
