One wall surface of the combustion chamber (5) is formed by the two valves (e.g. 4) and the surface between them on the cylinder head (3) and the opposing surfaces on the piston (2). The side walls (6, 11) of the combustion chamber (5) run near to these on the outer circle of the valves and the intermediary surface. The piston has a deflection surface (11) and an inclined surface (10) which together with the inclined surfaces (9) on the cylinder head form a 'squeezing gap' (25). The design minimises the formation of CO and NO reduces fueld consumption and increases power output.
