Prepn. of TiCl3 by reduction of TiCl4 with an organo-Al cpd. (I) of formula RnAlZ3-n (in which R is an aliphatic, polymeric and/or unsatd. hydrocarbon gp.; X is halogen, pref. Cl or alkoxy), in which (A) the Al cpd. is first reacted with TiCl4 at below 40 degrees C in molar ratio below 1:100, and (B) the reaction is continued with sufficient Al cpd. to give a ratio of alkyl gps. to Ti of at least 1:1. Reaction is in an inert liquid hydrocarbon. Used in dyeing and bleaching of textiles, as analytical reagent and reducing agent for nitro cpds., oximes, etc. and as a component of Ziegler-Natta catalysts for olefin polymerisation. TiCl3 with higher surface area than the usual 1-10m2/g. is obtd., eliminating the need for tedious ball-milling, etc. The alpha-or beta-modification may be obtd. by suitable choice of (I). |
