<p>A battery charger for use in charging secondary batteries in order to avoid the undesired effects caused by overcharging, wherein the battery terminal voltage is compared with a reference voltage which is variable between upper and lower limits, the result of the comparison switching "on" and "off" control circuitry in accordance with the sensed difference between the reference voltage and the battery terminal voltage, the control circuitry causing an increase or decrease of charging current between two given limits the lower of which may be zero, and a corresponding increase or decrease in the reference voltage in accordance with the ON/OFF ratio of the control circuitry, the ON/OFF ratio itself being continually modified as charging progresses so as to gradually reduce the average charging current.</p> |
