For the purposes of transferring groups of cigarettes having a particularly unstable structure from a conveyor of said groups of cigarettes to a cigarette packaging machine, the device has two opposite side walls in the compartment for containing the group being transferred, one wall being formed by a fixed part (38) and a movable part (39) and the other wall being formed by a single movable part (34). The movable parts (34 and 39) of said two opposite side walls are each fitted with a corresponding object towards the group of cigarettes and level with that layer of cigarettes which makes the structure of the group of cigarettes particularly unstable during the transfer operations.
