Each object or person to be located carries an electromagnetic wave transmitter. The location part of the system consists of one or several electromagnetic wave receivers. The transmitters are designed to emit an identifying coded signal and they are normally passive. They transmit only when their associated receiver has a specific coded signal. This specific signal is transmitted by a transmitter associated with each search and position location receiver which is designed to detect the coded identification signal emitted by the passive transmitters.
