The excavator is used by the dentist to scrape away the decayed parts of the tooth and, compared to known excavators, has the advantage of having a greater mechanical strength even after repeated grinding. It has, below the cutting edge (C B A), a surface (C E B) which is substantially semi frustoconical, with an axis (N O) perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (H M) of the excavator tip. The angle " alpha " is preferably between 30 DEG and 31 DEG and remains unaltered even after the cutting edge has been sharpened by grinding the surface (B C E). <IMAGE>
