The floating gate (G) may be incorporated in a sluice (L) in a submerged estuary barrage (O) and automatically opens under water pressures. The gate G is ballasted and is lifted as the retained water level rises. The gate may pivot one way about a vertical axis on one side and under the action of water currents. The gate (G) may comprise a block of trapezoidal section when viewed normal to the longitudinal axis of the barrage (0), may lodge in a sluice opening (L) of reciprocal form, and may oscillate vertically with the water level.
